HSK Vocabulary Level Check: Choose a Map Starting Point

Use graded Chinese recognition, reading, and recall tasks to choose a practical HSKMAP starting level without treating the result as an official exam score.

How to run the check

This is a study-placement check, not an official HSK practice test. Complete each band without a dictionary, translation app, or pinyin input. For every sentence, check three things separately: can you read it aloud, understand it without translating word by word, and answer or adapt it?

Stop when two or more tasks in a band require guessing. Start your map review one band below that point, repair the weak vocabulary, and repeat the check after a week of mixed review.

  • Give yourself about 90 seconds per five-sentence band.
  • Count a sentence only when both the main meaning and the key time, comparison, or condition are clear.
  • Reading the characters is different from recognizing a memorized English translation; test both.
  • Say one new sentence with the same pattern before moving to the next band.

Foundation check: HSK 1 starting skills

Read these sentences aloud and explain them in your own words: 你好,我叫李明。今天是三号。爸爸在家喝茶。你的学校在哪儿?我想买三个苹果。

Then cover the Chinese and try to produce a short greeting, today's date, one family sentence, one location question, and a sentence using a number plus a measure word. If character recognition is slow or tones disappear completely, begin with the HSK 1 map.

  • Meaning check: identify who is at home and what he is drinking.
  • Grammar check: explain why 个 appears between 三 and 苹果.
  • Recall check: ask where a person or place is using 哪儿.
  • Output check: replace 苹果 with another HSK 1 noun and say the new sentence.

Beginner expansion check: HSK 2 skills

Read and interpret these sentences: 我每天七点起床。因为下雨,所以我没去。这个房间比那个房间大。你已经吃饭了吗?请告诉我怎么去火车站。

A comfortable HSK 2 result means you notice the relationship words, not only the nouns and verbs. Explain the cause and result, identify what is being compared, and answer the completed-action question naturally.

  • Meaning check: state why the speaker did not go.
  • Grammar check: make a new comparison with 比.
  • Recall check: ask whether someone has already completed a daily action.
  • Output check: give one simple direction using a place word you know.

Independent daily-language check: HSK 3 skills

Read and interpret these sentences: 虽然很累,但是他还在工作。除了汉语以外,她还会说英语。如果明天天气好,我们就去爬山。我对中国历史很感兴趣。这件事让我想起小时候。

At this band, test whether connectors and fixed patterns are available quickly. Summarize each sentence, then change one detail while keeping the original structure. If the individual words look familiar but the relationship between clauses is unclear, review HSK 2 before concentrating on HSK 3.

  • Meaning check: identify the contrast in the first sentence.
  • Grammar check: name the condition and result in the 如果…就… sentence.
  • Recall check: say two things someone can do using 除了…以外…还….
  • Output check: describe one topic that interests you using 对…感兴趣.

Choose the result conservatively

If the foundation band was difficult, start at HSK 1. If foundation was comfortable but the second band broke down, start at HSK 2 while mixing in short HSK 1 repair sessions. If both beginner bands were comfortable and the third band was inconsistent, start at HSK 3.

Passing a recognition check does not mean a level is finished. Use the map to test random order, listening, active recall, and sentence production. The best starting level is the one that leaves enough challenge to learn without hiding large gaps underneath new vocabulary.
